This article from Sweden describes the experience of managing 11 patients after myeloablative treatment and allogeneic stem cell transplantation at home. These patients were compared to 11 patients who could not be treated at home due to the lack of a caregiver, the presence of a pet or where the patient felt unsafe. Patients managed at home received nurse visits once or twice daily and the physician telephoned the patient daily after reviewing the test results. Days with fever, time to engraftment, days with G-CSF and acute GVHD were the same in both groups. Seven patients were readmitted to the hospital due to fever or lack of caregiver at home. Patients managed at home had: significantly fewer days of total parenteral nutrition p 0.01 ; , required fewer erythrocyte transfusions p 0.01 ; and platelet infusions p 0.01 ; , fewer days on intravenous antibiotics p 0.05 ; and analgesics p 0.05 ; and less days till discharged to the out-patient clinic p 0.001. Bottom line: If you like garlic it's probably a good idea to continue eating it as it appears to be beneficial to the cardiovascular and gastrointestinal systems. For the treatment of high cholesterol, however, it should only be considered sole therapy in very mild cases as part of a complete lifestyle approach.

Echinacea jade plant

Echinacea is a wildflower known as the purple coneflower. It is found in North American plains, prairies and open woodlands. Echinacea claims to increase bodily resistance to infection. Echinacea can help shorten the length of an illness but not prevent it. But the real question is, does it work? Well, studies have been mixed. A recent study just came out finding that there was no significant difference in people who supplemented with Echinacea. If you want to take Echinacea, speak to your doctor first. Take it as directed because if you take it for an extended period of time, it may weaken your resistance to the cold virus and revia.
Aloe GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Aloe Vera plant is native to North Africa. Aloes have been used all over the world throughout the ages for their various medicinal properties. Manufacturers sell the transparent gel from the plant's leaf as a topical remedy; they also process it into "juice" and pills, which are taken internally for gastrointestinal benefits or as a tonic a substance that works to balance the body's systems instead of addressing a specific ailment ; . For topical use, aloe gels work well on sunburn, rashes, and other minor irritations look for products containing 95 to 100% pure aloe ; . Aloebased ointments and sprays are also available for other skin traumas. Aloe for internal use comes in liquids, tablets, and capsules. ROLE FOR ANTI-AGING: The gel of the aloe leaf contains several chemicals, a polysaccharide, enzymes, nutrients, and other compounds that seem to fight bacteria and fungi, reduce inflammation and encourage wound healing. Furthermore, aloeride and acemannan, two isolated compounds in the gel of the aloe leaf, have been shown to stimulate the immune system and improve skin healing time. Research carried out by Okyar et al in 2001 revealed that aloe leaf gel extract could be useful in the treatment of non-insulin dependent Type II ; diabetes mellitus. THERAPEUTIC DAILY AMOUNT: Check product labels for dosage recommendations MAXIMUM SAFE LEVEL: Aloe juice products for oral consumption are generally considered safe, although drinking more than a pint a day may lead to diarrhea. SIDE EFFECTS CONTRAINDICATIONS: Gel preparations used topically have not been associated with side effects. Products made from the plant's latex can cause side effects such as intestinal cramping due to their laxative effect. Because of these side effects, the latex form of aloe should not be used by elderly people, children, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and anyone with inflammatory intestinal diseases, such as Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, or appendicitis. Arabinogalactan GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Arabinogalactan AG ; is a phytochemical extracted from the timber of the larch tree. The immune-enhancing herb echinacea also contains AG, as do leeks, carrots, radishes, pears, wheat, red wine, and tomatoes. ROLE IN ANTI-AGING: AG is an important source of dietary fiber. Research has shown that AG increases the production of short-chain fatty acids SCFA's ; , principally butyrate and proprionate, which are essential for the health of the colon. AG also acts as a food supply for "friendly" bacteria, in that it helps to increase levels of "good" bacteria such as bifidobacteria and lactobacillus, while eliminating "bad" bacteria. AG has a beneficial effect upon the immune system as it increases the activity of natural killer cells and other immune system components, thus helping the body to fight infection. THERAPEUTIC DAILY AMOUNT: 1000-3000mg per day MAXIMUM SAFE LEVEL: Not established SIDE EFFECTS CONTRAINDICATIONS: May cause bloating Ashwagandha root Withania somniferum ; GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Ashwagandha root has extensive historical use in traditional Indian and Ayurvedic medicine. It is most commonly used to treat inflammatory conditions, such as arthritis, fever, tumors, and a wide range of infectious diseases.
A hundred random Echinacea plants were measured in the spring. Half of the plants had wood shavings put down last year and the other half had none put down. Plants with mulch averaged 4.96 cm in height and plants without mulch were taller averaging 7.07 cm. The echinacea yields and seed quality is not currently available and dramamine. Once the target enzyme has been identified, then usually a lead inhibitor has previously been reported, or can be predicted from studies with related enzymes, or has appeared, in more recent years, from the rapid screening methods now available of industrial chemical collections libraries ; . The design process is then initially concerned with optimizing the potency and selectivity of action of the inhibitor to the target enzyme using in vitro biochemical tests; nowadays, this has the advantage that the pure enzyme from recombinant DNA technology may be available for such studies. Candidate drugs are then examined by in vivo animal studies for oral absorption, stability to the body's metabolizing enzymes, and toxic side effects. Because many candidates may fall at this stage, the whole design cycle recommences because further design is then necessary to maintain desirable features and eliminate undesirable features from the in vivo profile. Because an in vivo profile in animal studies is not directly translatable to the human situation, studies with human volunteers are also required before a drug enters clinical trials. Increased concentrations of certain bacteria have been reported in people at high risk for colon cancer, Foote and Hill said. One of the strains found in the study -- Bacteroides fragilis -- may contribute to inflammatory bowel disease and diarrhea, the researchers said. In their report, published in the Journal of Clinical Pharmacy and Therapeutics, the researchers say larger studies are needed to determine whether components of echinacea affect bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract. -- AP bowls ate 59 percent less. 4. The amount of blood expected to be taken at sampling, while below 10% of blood volume, are significantly high. Given the state of current laboratory methods, it seems that samples can be much smaller, as most tests no longer require 5 ml of serum anymore, more like 0.1 ml. Remember refinement and reduction this can be applied to sampling as well. PR1: Please explain why your specific studies require collection of the amount of blood requested in your application. Response: Blood collection is limited to 2% total body mass e.g., 2 ml kg body mass ; and is well below accepted veterinary standards e.g., Murray 2000 ; , as noted in our application. The APHIS reviewer is correct in that some clinical lab tests, such as a comprehensive profile, can be run on as little as 0.1 ml of blood. However, we are making the most of the invasive manipulation of drawing blood in order to learn as much as possible about the health, condition, and potential disease states of the sampled fur seals. The analytical tests that we plan to conduct are usually run in at least duplicate, if not triplicate to assure accuracy. Estimated volumes of blood for required analyses: Blood biochemistry: 5 ml blood Hematology: 1 ml blood Serology: 5 ml blood Endocrinology: 5 ml blood Immunology: 5 ml blood Contaminants: 5 ml Archive: 5 ml The archive will be collected in case a vial meant for a particular assay is broken or if there is an error that requires an assay to be re-run. In our application we stated all the different assays that we planned to run: "Blood will be collected and analyzed for hematology and blood chemistry including glucose, lactate dehydrogenase, creatine phosphokinase, blood urea nitrogen, triglyceride, non-esterified fatty acids, creatinine, sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase, albumin, gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase, serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase, total protein, cholesterol, globulin, total bilirubin ; , for serology, bateriology and virology includes brucella, leptospirosis, seal herpesvirus, toxoplasmosis ; , endocrinology including assays of free and bound triiodothyronine and thyroxine, cortisol, corticosterone, testosterone, progesterone, estrogen, leptin and ghrelin ; . So many herbs have been shown by historical use to be beneficial, yet literally thousands of herbs haven't been clinically tested or have been minimally tested, Blumenthal says. "Do we need more studies on tested herbs, like ginkgo or garlic? The answer is yes because the medical establishment has a double standard. They're very willing to accept one anecdotal or poorly documented report or clinical case report of adverse effects, but even after a dozen or two dozen clinical trials showing benefits or safety, even when they're meta-analyzed, even then many people in the conventional medical community are very reluctant to accept the benefits, " he says. According to Blumenthal, a big problem plaguing current herbal medicine studies is a lack of specificity regarding what herbal constituents are being tested and what lengths of time and dosages are needed to see results. Because of a lack of standards in test design and practices, studies on herbs come back skewed or just wrong. The media then picks up on these skewed results and reports the ineffectiveness of herbs, without understanding the base problems with the studies. This was the case in last summer's failed echinacea study, in which researchers used the less medicinally recommended variety of echinacea Echinacea angustifolia rather than E. purpurea or E. pallida ; and less than one-third the recommended dose--then they declared echinacea ineffective. The general public, as well as many members of the mainstream medical community, will never hear the problems with the study, nor any further details about it, Blumenthal says. All they will hear is the media's sound bite: Echinacea doesn't work against colds and the flu. Blumenthal and the ABC are taking steps to change this problem."I do a one-hour presentation [several times a year at universities and conferences] showing the results of certain clinical trials on herbs and supplements and the headlines.
